The yearly tradition
Every year we do a day out at the Australian Open. It's become one of our summer rituals. We watch the players slog it out and try to perfect our spectating skills. Anyone for an ice cream? Yep it's a long day for us... Years ago we used to fork out quite a considerable amount to watch a game on Rod Laver Arena but then we stumbled across the appeal of having just a day (ground) pass. If you head to see the tennis in the first week, you are guaranteed of seeing captivating games on the outer (smaller) courts which are all accessible with the day pass. You can come and go as you please, go between the various courts depending on the play schedule and sit wherever you want. This is the real benefit of course because you can get uber lucky and find yourself in the best seats, directly next to all the action for minimal cost.
This year we made a bee line for Margaret Court (on day 4) to see Tipsarevic verse Benneteau in the third round. A brilliant five set match which was compelling to watch right to the very end. We also happened to score court side seats adjoining the players box, peering over to where the players enter the court. What a result! Only thing is, come the end of the game, these seats are always the ones where you get trampled on by every eager fan who is desperate to get their tennis idols autograph. Some people squeeze past others literally jump you standing on the edges of the seats. Being in the thick of it was definitely a unique experience. It was brilliant in its own way to be a part of all the excitement and energy. Here's a bit of a photo journal of our day.
How fun! I so wish I could attend the AO. Looks like a great day.
