Clouded: Isabel Marant Eloa shorts & Baker top

Outfit shots for me at the moment are the most difficult thing to do. I'm trying to manage all on my lonesome so I take fifty plus photo's and hopefully two are usable.  Self-portraiture with a point and shoot and no tripod is virtually impossible!  The frustration is mounting. If I'm even in the frame I'm lucky and even luckier if my ass isn't huge or I'm caught in a somewhat inappropriate of flat out unflattering um... what would you call it?  A pose?  I use that term very loosely as I'm very aware of my sheer awkwardness after seeing the result of tonight.  Delete... delete... delete all. Start again...  Fast forward... I ended up with the shots below.  Sheer flukes and 'ok' enough to make it to blog press.  I do feel some sense of accomplishment now it's all over.

Ok... now to more important topics, the down low on the outfit.  The shorts are devine. So light to wear and they have an over sized, boxy fit that make them feel like you literally have nothing on. They will undoubtedly be the most worn item on summer days due to how breathable and comfortable the fabric is.  I actually really like the various different, layered styled pockets and the loosely slung fit of the shorts. I think the combination of the two makes the legs look more slender. Keep in mind I'm a little one (I'm only 156 cm tall), the absence of heels and the over sized nature of the entire look. Normally I struggle carrying off over sized items. It's a height thing.  Over sized tends to make me look even shorter than I actually am and my frame broader.

The top is lovely albeit exceptionally over sized.  It's very long (it finishes near my butt) and I'm wearing it here with the sleeves pushed up (they have elasticised ends which makes it easy). The arms (when worn down) are approximately 7/8 in length but I'm not fond of that look for me.  Being small, it feels all consuming and my frame is overwhelmed due to the length and billowing sleeve. I look like I'm in a clown suit if the top isn't tucked, and propped to sit correctly.

It sounds like there is a lot needed to make this outfit work (at least for me), but not so. It's actually just a really different look to my norm so takes some getting used to on my behalf.  I say my 'fit' finds more for the intended benefit of others who may be considering a purchase. It's so hard shopping online and items are often very different in person than how they appear on online models who are 5'10" and above. It's never a realistic look for me so I hope to offer a little real-life balance.

  1. Gorgeous outfit on you! :) I really like the top. So perfect for a hot day, nice and flowy :) If that's even a word!

I have a tiny gorrillapod I use as a tripod for outfit pics - just set it on something tall enough :)

    1. Ha ha... I would use 'flowy' so we will make it a 'real' word :) The gorrillapod is a great idea. Thanks for the tip. I needed it!

Love the look! I was about to purchase the same top and shorts, but it's so hard to shop online, especially when the line generally runs small. What size do you recommend for the top and shorts, if I'm a US size 4 and wear Isabel jeans in a size 2? I'd appreciate your help before I press "purchase now". Many thanks.

    1. Hi Carolina,

I understand. I always have the same issue and Isabel Marant is the most difficult to buy with the varying kind of fit and sizing issues.

I wear a 0-1 in IM sizes (last season) in bottoms depending on fit. These shorts sit on my hips. I wear a size 25 (J Brand jeans) and I'm a US size 2/Australian/UK 6. The shorts and top I'm wearing here are both FR 36's.

I would highly recommend going for the size 36 for you in the top. It's massive on me and could easily fit a US size 4.

The shorts I think you could go the size 36 or 38. I would probably go the 38 (if you are wanting the fit I have & the same as the runway fit) as they are intended to be big, slouchy and sit really low on the hips (the whole style), and as long as you are wanting (and realize they will be) the really oversized look. If you are wanting still a bit big but a tad bit more fitted (say at the waist & for them to sit higher up) I would say you could pull probably pull off the size 36 as well. As an example, the waist band is 32" on the 36) and sits on the top of my hips, but for a US size 4, would sit higher up. Just depends on the look you are after. I definitely wouldn't go larger than a 38 in the shorts though as they will go really boxy and swamp you. The 38 will give you more of the runway look :)

      I hope that helps...

      Dear Mandi,
Thanks for replying the post and e-mail. You are my savior!!! :) Thanks to your advise, I snagged the last Baker blouse in 36, but I'm on the return wait list for the shorts in 38. Net A Porter only had the 40 left. But I'm glad I didn't buy it and avoided the hassle of returning it. Got my fingers crossed for the 38!
You have no idea how helpful you've been. I had even phoned the Isabel Marant store in NY and sadly, they weren't really helpful with the sizing.
      So thanks a mil!!! :)

    3. Glad to help out. I'm sure you'll get lucky with a return on the size 38's. Unfortunately it just means checking the site heaps. Glad you grabbed the last Baker blouse. I'm sure you will love it. You could always email NAP customer care and ask them to reserve a return in the Eloa shorts in size 38 (give them NAPs item code as well) and see if they will do that for you. Worth a try. I've done it before and they just emailed me and reserved it then I had to log in and buy it as normal.

I was signed up on the return list a few days ago. And totally worth doing! I just got the email that the shorts in 38 are available. Pressing "Purchase Now" as we speak! Again, many thanks! :)

  5. It seems like there's a threshold at which point the oversized becomes flowing. Instead of simply looking big, it takes on the draping qualities of those clothes like kaftans, capes, and so on, that are meant to be loose and flowing. Of course, that threshold is a moving target, and just one more thing designers need to think about when designing their clothes (especially for different body types), but I'd say you hit the right balance with your lovely "flowy" ensemble. :)

    1. Flowing vs oversized is something I really struggle with being on the shorter side and since it's not my normal look. I'm getting used to this outfit although as you say, it is a moving target and next season this may even be too much 'flowing'.
